A repetitive strain injury (RSI) can be a real pain in the neck…. or arm, wrist, or various other parts of the body.

This type of injury, caused by overuse or repetitive movement, is associated with pain that’s commonly felt in tendons, nerves, or muscles. RSI is a very common occupational injury that typically affects the upper body, including the arms, wrists, neck, shoulders, forearms and elbows.

Below are some of the most common causes of RSI:

  • High intensity activity where you get limited breaks or rests
  • Repetitive motions and activities
  • Poor posture or activities that cause you to work in an awkward position
  • Cold temperatures, vibrating equipment, and stress

There are a variety of symptoms of RSI such as pain, aching, tenderness, weakness, stiffness, tingling, throbbing, and cramps. If you develop these types of symptoms and you believe it’s a result of your job duties, you should speak with your employer immediately. They may be willing to limit or moderate your tasks to help minimize the pain.

To help relieve the symptoms of RSI, an anti inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen may be necessary. Also, using a hot or cold pack, or a splint or elastic support, may be helpful. Some people find activities such as yoga or other stretching exercises to be beneficial.

Before RSI happens to you, take these preventative measures at your work to avoid this painful experience. Practice excellent posture and take breaks from long or repetitive work.  If you’re working at a computer, make certain your seat, mouse, screen and keyboard are in a position that causes you the least amount of strain.

Talk to a workers’ compensation lawyer if you’re suffering from work-related RSI and your employer refuses to help pay for treatment.
