Summer fun is right around the corner. Swimming, boating, skateboarding and a variety of other outdoor activities make for good times and amazing memories. If you aren’t careful, however, those memories can include spending hours in the emergency room.
Accidents happen, but taking extra precaution is important and can help you avoid certain injuries that otherwise could be more severe.
Here are 4 tips to help you enjoy your summer safely:
- Practice firework safety. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that fireworks often cause major burns, blindness, scars and even death. Practice caution when using fireworks and never allow small children to handle them.
- Be cautious on wheels. When biking or skateboarding, wear a properly fitting helmet even on short rides. It is also best to wear additional protective gear such as knee and elbow pads.
- Avoid insects. Avoid wearing bright colors and wear insect repellant that contains DEET, which helps keep insects away. Insects are not only annoying but can be dangerous if a person is bitten repeatedly or by a more dangerous insect.
- Be watchful around water. Never take your eyes off of children when they are in a swimming pool. Investigate the pool and other bodies of water to make sure it is safe and deep enough for children to jump in without harming themselves.
There is no guarantee that using precaution will prevent you or your child from suffering from an accident, but being aware of potential danger and practicing these tips will help you enjoy a safe, relaxing summer.
