A recent decline in the number of truck drivers on the roads has led companies to put much more time and effort into recruiting women. The number of female truck drivers has risen significantly over the past few years, and those women are proving to be very safe behind the wheel.
The Women in Trucking Association recently celebrated over 200 million safe miles driven by female truck drivers, and many trucking companies state that their female drivers have fewer issues with truck accidents, stricter compliance to company rules and fewer failed inspections than their male coworkers.
Despite the encouraging numbers, many women see the trucking industry as a male-dominated one and do not pursue careers as truckers. Increased company outreach and encouragement from the trucking community will hopefully change the stigma.
