Despite the efforts of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and other organizations, the number of bicycle accidents in the state have not significantly improved over the last 18 years. In fact, Florida was named the worst state for bicycle-related deaths in the nation in 2015 by the CDC.
There have been major efforts by a couple of Florida organizations to improve bicycle safety over the past several years. This article explains:
In the spring of 2000, special license plates were created and available for Florida vehicles in an effort to make drivers more aware of bicyclists. The proceeds from the sale of these plates went to two organizations: Bike Florida and the Florida Bicycle Association. These two organizations have worked over the years to educate Florida residents on bicycle safety and also promote bicycle tourism in Florida.
