U.S. Attorney General William Barr recently moved to legalize the federal death penalty, calling for 5 executions to occur between December 2019 and January 2020.
Currently, 62 federal prisoners sit on death row, but whether any of their executions will be carried out is uncertain given the legal challenges Barr will face.
When the federal death penalty was last renewed in 1988, a grand total of 3 prisoners were executed.
On a state level, 29 currently legalize the death penalty, with Texas holding 224 criminals facing this punishment out of the 2,600 across the United States.
