How are Computer Crimes Investigated?

April 27, 2017

basics of computer crime investigation

Methods of a computer crime investigation can differ greatly from typical investigative techniques. It’s hard to dust the data off a hard-drive for fingerprints!

However, investigators do have their ways when it comes to such crimes. The most common techniques of a computer crime investigation such as child pornography charges include:

  • ISP information. Internet service providers provide information on a suspect’s IP address, thus leading investigators to e-mail addresses and other valuable information.
  • Device retrieval. Investigators thoroughly examine a computer’s hard drive away from Internet interference. Even deleted files can be viewed with certain investigative softwares.
