Sexting a minor, like other sex crimes, can certainly carry heavy consequences if you have been accused and convicted. Any obscene material sent to a minor online could be considered sexting under the law, even if it is unintentional, and such a charge can damage your reputation or include jail time.
In the case of former congressman Anthony Weiner, a plea agreement was reached when Weiner was charged with sexting a minor in North Carolina. It is believed that Weiner was aware of the girl’s age at the time.
Weiner’s reputation and political career have been ruined by such sexual scandals, and he was forced to resign as a U.S. Congress member. A formal sentencing could include up to 10 years of jail time; however, since there is no minimum sentence for sexting, that decision will lie with a judge.
