If you’ve ever shared the road with a bicycle, you’ve probably questioned whether or not the biker has the right of way. In fact, many drivers on the road are unfamiliar with the rules of the road when it comes to bicycle right of way.
The NHTSA states that all bicycles operating on the roadway should behave just as cars do. This includes riding in the same direction as other traffic and following all other traffic rules.
This also means that bicyclists have the right of way whenever a vehicle would have the right of way. For example, if a bicyclist yields at a stop sign before a car, the bicycle will have the right of way. In short, drivers should use the same judgement used for vehicles.
