Recently, Donald Trump nominated Jeff Sessions, Alabama senator and former federal prosecutor, to be the new United States Attorney General. As Attorney General, Sessions will be setting the federal policies and directives for attorneys across the United States.
Jeff Sessions comes to the table as a fan of old-school, strict law-and-order. This means that we can expect Simmons to oppose mandatory minimum sentencing for numerous offenders, including drug offenders and those accused of child porn.
Additionally, it’s anticipated that Sessions will not be in favor of “charge bargaining.” This means that serious charges cannot be dismissed in favor of pleas to lesser charges. What this means for defendants is that stricter sentences may be on the horizon.
